Understanding the BMI Metric.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used screening tool that compares your height and weight to estimate your total body fat. While it does not measure body fat directly, it serves as a highly reliable indicator of metabolic health risks across large populations.
The Global Standard Categories
- Underweight Below 18.5
- Optimal Weight 18.5 – 24.9
- Overweight 25.0 – 29.9
- Obese 30.0 and above
Limitations of the BMI System
BMI is a mathematical estimate. It cannot fundamentally distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass. Therefore, highly muscular athletes may classify as "overweight" or "obese" despite having very low body fat percentages. Always consult a healthcare professional for a complete, holistic health assessment.
